Presentation of heat stroke
Temp > 105 f
Flushed, dry skin NOT sweating
CNS depression
Severe dehydration
May lead to end organ damage due to release of endotoxins and cytokines
When can a child return to sports after an ankle injury
Full range of motion, full strength, no swelling, no pain, no joint instability
Dx when pt falls back on a posteriorly rotated, abducted arm
Anterior humeral dislocation
Dx when fall on an outstretched arm that is hyperextended at the elbow
Suprachondylar fracture
Dx when pain over the distal clavicle with a prominence noted over the area of point tenderness
Acromioclavicular injury
Dx when direct force to the posterior shoulder. Pain over the sternoclavicular joint with possible respiratory discomfort
Posterior sternoclavicular dislocation
Dx when shoulder and upper arm pain in the absence of asymmetry
Proximal humeral fracture
Dx when shoulder pain with elevating or lowering the arm, without any deformity. This can also present as chronic pain.
Rotator cuff injury
Which conditions refrain children from participating in contact sports
Splenomegaly
Hepatomegaly
One kidney
Repeated concussions
What are some high impact collision sports
Football, wrestling, handball and water polo
Sports that are not high contact
Baseball, squash, volleyball
Contraindications to sports participation
Pulmonary vascular disease with cyanosis and large r to l shunt
Severe pulmonary HTN
Aortic or mitral valve stenosis or regurgitation
Cardiomyopathy
Vascular form of Ehler denlos
Coronary anomalies of wrong sinus origin
Acute phase of pericarditis, myocarditis or Kawasaki disease
