What are the five functions of the Spleen?
- Dominating the transformation and transportation of the liquid and solid products of digestion after they have been rotten and ripened by the Stomach
- Controls blood, dominating the first stage of its formation and holding it in its proper place
- Dominating the muscles and four limbs, providing vigour and bulk
- Opening into the mouth and dominating the sense of taste
- Controlling the raising of Qi to counteract sinking and prolapse

What are the actions of SP1?
o Stops bleeding
o Regulates Spleen
o Unbinds Chest
o Calms the Heart and restores consciousness
What are the indications of SP1?
o Uterine bleeding, blood in the urine, blood in the stool, vomiting blood, nosebleed.
o Abdominal distension, sudden swelling of four limbs, sudden diarrhoea, vomiting
o Agitation, heat or fullness in chest, sadness, mania depression, excessive dreaming, insomnia, loss of consciousness
o Fever without sweat, cold feet, cold in lower limbs.

What are the actions of SP2?
o Regulates the Spleen
o Resolves dampness and clears damp-heat
o Harmonises middle-jiao and clears heat
o Calms the Shen
What are the indications of SP2?
o Swelling of limbs, body heaviness
o Abdominal pain and distension, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, sudden turmoil
o Agitation, insomnia, heart pain, fever without sweating, cold hands and feet
o Lumbar pain with inability to turn, disorders of big toe, heat in soles of feet.

What are the actions of SP3?
o Strengthens the Spleen o Resolves dampness and damp-heat o Harmonises the Spleen and Stomach o Regulates Qi o Stimulates the intellect (Yi)
What are the indications of SP3?
o Spleen/Stomach deficiency, heavy body, heaviness in four limbs, borborygmus, diarrhoea, constipation, hemorrhoids
o Abdominal pain, chest and Heart pain
o Febrile disease with fullness and inability to lie down
o Pain in knee and thigh, joint pain, lumbar pain, atrophy disorder

What are the actions of SP4?
o Strengthens the Spleen and Harmonises the Middle Jiao
o Regulates Qi and resolves Dampness

What are the indications of SP4?
o Epigastric pain, vomiting, no desire to eat, diarrhoea, tenesmus
o Mania-depression, manic raving, insomnia, Heart pain, gallbladder deficiency with much sighing
o Irregular menstruation, ob/gyn disorders, retention of placenta
o Swelling of head and face, oedema, jaundice, malaria
