Spinal Vertebrae Flashcards
Verbal Arch
Anterior (Vertebral Body, endplates)
Posterior (Pedicals, laminae, Pars, Processes)
Create passage way for spinal cord
Vertebral Body
(Soma/ centrum)
Cylindrical shaped structure
Endplate
On superior and inferior of vertebral body
Attach to vertebral body and outer layer of disk
Two layers
-inner bony layer
-outer cartilaginous layer, attaches to lamella of disk
Acts as growth plate early in life
-allows nutrition to be transferred from cancellous bone to intervertebral disk
Laminae
Thin plate of cortical bone that span Pericles and form posterior spinal canal
-protect posterior side of vertebral foramen
Vertebral Foramen
Area between anterior and posterior vertebral arches where spinal cord runs down
Pars Interacrticularis
Area between articulations processes and pedicle
Pedicle
Column of cortical bone with cancellous center that joins posterior and anterior column of spine
-used for posterior screws
Spinous Process
Middle of Laminae, projects inferior
- attachments for muscles and ligaments
- most posterior point of the spine
Transverse Process
Extend laterally from junction of pedicle and laminae (2 of them)
-attachment points, acts as lever
Articular process
Each spinal level has four, two superior and two inferior except for thoracic spine
-form a facet and zygapophyseal joint
Intervertebral Foramina
Notches on adjacent vertebrae that create a lateral circular opening for nerve roots and blood vessels
-can impinge if discs deteriorate or facet joints hypertrophy
