Ligaments Flashcards
Ligaments
Tough bands of fibrous tissue that connects bone to bone and permits normal range of motion (ROM) between joints
-allow for stability and mobility at same time
Continuous ligaments
Run full length of spine
Segmental ligaments
Only confined to one spinal level
Anterior Longitudinal Ligament (ALL)
Very dense and powerful continuous ligament that attaches at C2 running distally to the sacrum
Restrains anterior movement of one vertebral body over another
Holds disc in place anteriorly
Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (PLL)
-runs continuously from C2 distally to sacrum on posterior side
Not as strong as ALL, but wide at level of disks
Connects bodies to the center of the disk
Resists flexion and contain disk
Ligaments Flavum
Yellow ligament
Segmental from C2 to sacrum
Connects anterior side of alumina to superior and inferior side of each vertebral body
Under constant tension
Interspinous Ligament
Runs segmentally between spinous processes and attaches at each vertebral level anterior to supraspinuous ligament
Intertransverse Ligament
Runs between adjacent transverse processes
Segmental
Supraspinus Ligament
Ver strong continual ligament that runs along posterior tips of spinous process from C7 to sacrum
Limits flexion
Above C7 it is part of ligamentum nuchau (from C7 to posterior tip of the skull)
Facet Capsular Ligament
Attaches at the articular processes to limit the ROM of the facet
