Bone Anatomy Flashcards
Types of bone
Cortical (compact)
Cancellous (spongy)
Cortical Bone
(Lamellar)
Dense with tiny passage ways for nerves and blood vessels and lymph structures
Surface of bone, giving strength and structure
80% of bone mass
Surface good fixation point
Osteons
Structural unit of the cortical bone
Reinforcing columns arranged around lines of stress
Central Haversian canal for blood vessels and nerves
Cancellous Bone
Spongy with a high surface area
Less dense, weaker than cortical bone
Highly vascular and contains red bone marrow
Periosteum
Fiberous connective tissue that covers outer surface on bone
Outer layer- fibroblasts that make connective tissues and blood vessels and fivers
Inner layer; osteoclasts and osteoblasts that construct bone matrix
Endosteum
Inner surface of bone
