Bone Healing Flashcards
Wolff’s Law
Bone undergoes modeling and remodeling in response to forces acting on it
Osteogenesis
Process of bone development or repair (phases)
Osteoid Production
Step 1 of Osteogenesis
Create of colleagues matrix or organic framework
Stem cells produce osteoblasts to create osteoid
Some osteoblasts stay on external (periosteum) and internal (endosteum)
Mineralization
Step 2 of osteogenesis
Osteoblasts assemble calcium and phosphate ions to form salts then hydroxyapatite (HA) to deposit around matrix
Remodeling
Either resorption of unused bone or damage, stimulation and new bone formation
Graft or Fracture Healing
- Hematoma and Inflamation
- Granulation tissue results as debris creates osteoblasts
- Soft Callus; initial stages of mineralization
- Calcification
- Remodeling
Intercortical Bridging
Gap is rigidly fixed and union occurs between structures
Extena Callus Bridging
New bone grows from periosteum surrounding site and stimulate callus formation
Intramedullary Bridging
Callus arises from Endsteum
