Spinal Injuries Flashcards
What is spinal shock?
physiologic response to injury with complete loss of sensation and motor function
How long does it take spinal shock to resolve?
24hrs
What is neurogenic shock?
secondary to temporary shutdown of the sympathetic outflow from T1-L2
due to cervical or upper thoracic cord injury
What does neurogenic shock lead to?
hypotension
bradycardia
Describe a complete spinal injury?
no sensory or motor function below the level of the injury - poor prognosis
Describe an incomplete spinal injury?
some sensory and motor functioon present distal to the injury
- may return
What is Axonotemesis?
nerve injury due to compression or stretch from a higher degree of force resulting in death of the long axons to the point of injury
What is Neuropraxia?
temporary conduction defect from compression or stretch which resolves over time
What is Neurotemesis?
complete transaction of the nerve requiring surgical repair for any chance of recovery and function
