What is APS?
a disorder that manifests clinically as recurrent venous or arterial thrombosis and/or fetal loss
What are the signs of ASP?
increased anticardiolipin
recurrent pregnancy loss
thrombocytopenia - low levels of platelets in blood
levido reticularis - blotchy nodules on skin
What are the investigations for ASP?
CXR, ECHO, blood tests
- presence of ASP antibodies on 2 occasions, 12 weeks apart
What is the pathophysiology of ASP?
an autoimmune condition where antibodies are produced against phospholipid causing an increased risk of blood clots
What is the treatment of ASP?
lifelong anticoagulation
What is the treatment of ASP while pregnant?
LMWH and aspirin
What is secondary ASP?
seen in 20% of patients with lupus
