What is AS?
chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the spine
What is the hallmark of AS?
sacroilliac joint involvement
What is the peak age of AS? Male or female?
late adolesence and early adulthood (20-40)

What are the signs of AS?
back pain enthesitis anterior uveitis amyloidosis aortic valve problems pulmonary fibrosis enteric mucosal inflammation neurological involvement peripheral arthritis loss of lumbar lordosis and increased thoracic kyphosis
What does AS look like on Xray?
all of the vertebrae are fused together
- hunched back
What is the investigations for AS?
X ray - sacroilitis and syndemophytes (decreased bone density)
Schobers test
Bloods - HLA-B27 and inflammatory markers
MRI - shows early changes
What is the non pharmacological treatment for AS?
physiotherapy
occupational therapy
What is the pharmacological treatment for AS?
NSAIDs
Anti TNF - infliximab etc..
Secukinumab anti IL-17
DMARDs if peripheral arthritis
