What causes tetanus?
clostridium tetani - gram -ve anaerobic rods
What is the pathophysiology behind tetanus?
neurotoxin binds to inhibitory neurones which prevents neurotransmitter release
What is the incubation period of tetanus?
several weeks
What is the treatment for tetanus?
surgical debridement
antitoxins
penicillin/metranidazol
toxoid booster vaccination
How can tetanus be avoided?
toxoid vaccination
What is myositosis?
inflammation of the muscles
What can myositosis sometimes be caused by?
viral infections such as HIV, HTLV, rabies, influenza, fungals, protozoa
What is cellulitis?
generalised swelling and erythema of soft tissues
What organisms are most likely to cause cellulitis?
Bhaemolytic strep
staphylococci
