Spinal Cord Compression Flashcards
types of compression
acute or chronic
complete or partial
presentation of complete spinal cord compression
all motor and sensory functions affected
presentation of chronic compression
UMN signs predominant
presentation of external compression of the spinal cord
lower limbs first then upper limbs
presentation of internal compression of the spinal cord
upper limbs affected first
three examples of spinal cord compression syndromes
- central cord syndrome
- anterior cord syndrome
- Brown-Sequard syndrome
what causes central cord syndrome?
often elderly due to hyperflexion or extension injury of already stenotic neck
syringomyelia
presentation of central cord syndrome
cape-like loss of sensation over upper back with weakness in upper body
due to lateral CST lower limbs are not affected
presentation of anterior cord syndrome
motor paralysis (CST)
loss of pain/ temperature (STT) below level of lesion
normal DCLM pathway
what is Brown-Sequard syndrome?
cord hemi-section affected
presentation of Brown-Sequard syndome
loss of pain/ temperature (STT) on contralateral side
loss of motor function (CST) and fine touch (DCLM) on ipsilateral side
