Describe and evaluate WMM essay

A

• what is the WMM
• what is the central executive
• phonological loop
• Visio-partial sketchpad
• episodic buffer
• it is a strong for model for describing memory as it has clinical evidence to back it up
• the case study of KF
• however the study isn’t completely valid because
• additionally the mystery of the central executive

Q

Central executive

A

• divides limited attention
• allocates subsystems tasks
• limited processing capacity(?), stores no information

Q

Phonological loop

A

• deals with auditory info (acoustic coding)
• preserves order info arrives
• PHONOLOGICAL STORE stores words
• ARTICULATORY PROCESS allows maintenance rehearsal with a loop of 2 seconds

Q

Visio-spatial sketchpad

A

• stores visual and spatial information
• capacity of 3-4 items
• VISUAL CACHE stores visual data (form and colour)
• INNER SCRIBE records arrangements

Q

Episodic buffer

A

• integrates info processed in other subsystems into one event
• maintains time sequencing
• capacity of 4 chunks
• links WM to LTM

Q

Case study of KF

A

Bad auditory stm information but could process visual normally, his recall change depending on how he was given info, support finding of separate stores

Q

Why KF may not be valid

A

Unclear if he didn’t have other impairments, and not valid as only one situation

Q

Describe and evaluate interference as an explanation for forgetting

A

• described what interference is
• retroactive interference
• proactive interference
• it is a strong explanation as it has real world evidence to back it up
• Baddeley and Hitch Rugby names

Q

Intro what is interference

A

Interference is an explanation for memory loss in the LTM. It occurs when two pieces of information disrupt each other so it isn’t so much forgetting rather than the brain having issues locating and separating memories

Q

Retroactive interference

A

Happens when a newer memory interferes with an older one (degree of forgetting greater when memories are similar)

Q

Baddeley and Hitch Rugby players

A

Asked rugby players to recall names of other rugby players, the ones who were in less of the games had better recall cos there were less memories that interfered with others this increasoes validity of study as it’s a real world situation

Q

Baddeley and Hitch rugby players counterpoint

A

Didn’t have control variables, this form of differing happens occasionally but not often as the memories have to be very similar and this study has validity issues itself

Q

Retrieval failure due to lack of cues as an explanation for forgetting essay plan

A

• retrieval failure overview
• cues
• context dependent forgetting
• state dependent forgetting
• research on context dependant
• research on state dependant
• counter point

17
Q

Retrieval failure into overview

A

Forgetting info from cues not being available at the time of recall where the information is not gone but rather unable to access

18
Q

Context dependant forgetting

A

Recall depends on external cues such as location or weather

19
Q

State dependant forgetting

A

Recall dependent on internal cues such as emotion or sobriety

20
Q

Context dependant forgetting Godden and Baddeley

A

Deep sea divers learned a list of words in different location on land or not and then had to recall in different location on land or not, recall 40% lower in non matching conditions

21
Q

Baddeley counterpoint

A

Baddeley argues that the context effect aren’t very strong and environment have to be very doffernt to for an effect to be seen so can’t be applied very well to everyday life

22
Q

Interference conclusion

A
