Species concept Flashcards
Speciation
the origin of new species
Morphological species concept
Organisms are classified as the same species if they are anatomically the same
Ecological species concept
Defines a species as a group of related organisms that share a niche
Phylogenetic species concept
Group of organisms that share a common ancestor and can be distinguished from other organisms
Biological species concept
Species is a group of populations whos members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable and fertile offspring
Macroevolution
changes in allele frequency in a population over time (mutation, natural selection, genetic drift, gene flow)
Microevolution
broad patterns of evolutionary change above species level (evolution of mammals, evolution of flowering plants)
