Glucose homeostasis Flashcards
Glucose
Major fuel for cellular respiration and a key source of carbon skeletons for biosynthesis
Hormones involved in glucose homeostasis
Insulin and glucagon
Role of insulin and glucagon
Regulate the breakdown of glycogen into glucose
Where does glucose homeostasis occur
Liver
What triggers the synthesis of glycogen
A carbohydrate rich meal raises insulin levels which triggers synthesis of glycogen
What causes the release of glucose
Low blood sugar causes glucagon to stimulate the breakdown of glycogen and release glucose
What type of feedback is this
Negative
Steps that happen when blood glucose levels fall
- Secretion of glucagon by alpha cells of the pancreas
2. Breakdown of glycogen and release glucose into blood –> blood glucose level rises to normal
Steps that happen when blood glucose levels raise
- Secretion of insulin by beta cells of the pancreas
2. Transport of glucose into body cells and storage of glucose as glycogen –> blood glucose level falls to normal
