Mammilian heart Flashcards
Type of circulation
Double circulation
Atria of heart
Have relatively thin walls and serve as collection chambers for blood returning to the heart (from lungs and tissues)
Ventricles of heart
Have thicker walls and contract much more forcefully
Cardiac cycle
Heart contracts and relaxes in a rhythmic cycle
systole, diastole, cardiac output, heart rate, stroke volume
Systole
The contraction, or pumping phase
Diastole
The relaxation of filling phase
Cardiac output
The volume of blood pumped into the systemic circulation per minute and depends on both the heart rate and stroke volume
Heart rate
(also called pulse) is the number of beats per minute
Stroke volume
The amount of blood pumped in a single contraction
How to calculate cardiac volume
Heart rate x stroke volume
How many valves in the heart and what do they do
- Prevent back flow
AV valves
Atrioventricular valves, separate each atrium and ventricle (bicuspid and tricuspid)
Semilunar valves
Control blood flow to the aorta and pulmonary artery
What is the lub dub sound caused by
Recoil of blood against the semilunar valves
Sinoatrial node (SA node)
Pacemaker, sets the rate and timing at which cardiac muscle cells contract
