species and taxonomy Flashcards
Species definiton
Two organisms belong to the same species if they are able to produce fertile offspring.
How is courtship behaviour a precursor to succesful mating
(what is its aim?)
It aims to attract a mate of the same species
What does courtship behaviour prevent?
-interbreeding
-mating with different species ( as courtship behaviour is species specific )
How can scientists use courtship behaviour to distinguish between species?
-courtship behaviour is species specific
-this can be used to classify organsims as the more closely related they are, the more their courtship resembles each other
What does a phylogentic classification attempt to do?
-arrange species into groups based on their evolutionary origins and relationships
How does a phylogenetic classification system work?
-a hierachy in which smaller groups are placed into larger groups, with no overlap between groups
What is each group in a phylogenetic classification system called?
A taxon ( plural taxa )
One hierachy is comprised of which taxa? ( descending )
-domain
-kingdom
-phylum
-class
-order
-family
-genus
-species

How is eached species identified using a binomial?
The binomial consists of the name of its genus and species e.g. homo sapiens
What have advances in immunology and genome sequencing helped with?
Clarifying the evolutionary relationships between organisms
