ATP and energy Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
A
Nucleotide derivative
-Adenine
-ribose
- Three phosphate groups
2
Q
Describe the hydrolysis of ATP
A
- Hydrolysed into ADP > adenosine diphosphate and an inorganic phosphate (pi)
- Catalysed by the enzyme ATP hydrolyse
3
Q
What is the relationship between ATP and energy required reactions? (2)
A
- Hydrolysis of ATP can be coupled to energy-requiring reactions within cells e.g. Na+ K+ pump
- Inorganic phosphate released during the hydrolysis of ATP can be transferred to another molecule > making them more reactive
(Phosphorylation)
4
Q
How is ATP re synthesised?
A
- Condensation reaction of ADP Pi
- Catalysed by enzyme ATP synthase
(In either photosynthesis or respiration)
5
Q
Why is ATP a suitable source of energy?
A
- Single step process >immediate energy
- Soluble
- small , manageable amounts of energy
