Speciation 2 Flashcards
Speciation
The process which forms new species from the isolation and then the genetic divergence of the populations
Allopatric Speciation
Speciation caused from geographical isolation due to a physical barrier followed by genetic divergence
Sympatric Speciation
Speciation from isolation which is not geographic followed by genetic divergence
Polyploidy
the presence of extra sets of chromosomes due to accidents of cell division like nondisjunction
Autopolyploidy
the presence of extra sets of multiple chromosomes derived from a single species
Adaptive Radiation
The rise of many new species from a single species over a relatively short period of time
Punctuated Equilibrium
Depicts evolution as long periods of no evolutionary change followed by rapid periods of change
Gradualism
Depicts evolution as a slow steady process in which organisms change and develop slowly over time
Extinction
The death of all members of a species
Proposed by paleontologists Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould in 1972 based on their fossil research
Punctuated Equilibrium
Proposed by Charles Darwin based on his years of observations
Gradualism
What is a continuous population dividing into two or more smaller populations?
