Pop Gen 1 Flashcards
Population
A group that includes all members of a species living in a given area
Species
A group of populations whose individuals breed and produce fertile offspring
Hybrids
individuals of different species interbreed
Gene Pool
All the alleles of all the genes in all the individuals of a population
what causes the population to evolve?
allele frequencies changing from one generation to the next
Equilibrium Population
An idealized population where allele frequencies do not change between generations so no evolution occurs
5 conditions for equilibrium
Very large population (No genetic drift)
No emigration of immigration (No gene flow can occur)
No mutations (No new alleles can be added to the gene pool)
Random mating (No sexual selection can occur)
No natural selection (All traits must equally aid in survival)
The Hardy Weinberg Principle
A mathematical model that shows that the frequencies of alleles and genotypes remain constant from one generation to the next in an equilibrium population
(p^2+2pq+q^2=1
p=frequency of allele A
q=frequency of allele a
p^2=frequency of individual AA
q^2=frequency of individual aa
2qp=frequency of individual Aa)
