Protists Flashcards
Protists are?
are basically a collection of eukaryotes that do not fit in the Kingdoms Plantae, Animalia, and Fungi
Why is classification of protists difficult?
because it is a polyphyletic group containing multiple, independent lineages and common ancestors
polyphyletic
(of a group of organisms) derived from more than one common evolutionary ancestor or ancestral group and therefore not suitable for placing in the same taxon.
8 major groups of protists
Excavates, Euglenozoans, Stramenopiles, Alveolates, Rhizarians, Amoebozoans, Red Algae. Green Algae
What is secondary endosymbiosis?
is when non-photosynthetic protists engulf photosynthetic protists
the chloroplasts that have 4 membranes are labeled as what?
2 from the primary endosymbiosis of the photosynthetic bacteria, 1 from the engulfed protists membrane, 1 from the host food vacuole
How do protists reproduce?
Protists mostly reproduce asexually through mitosis to form identical copies of themselves as seen in Paramecium
Paramecium
a single-celled freshwater animal that has a characteristic slipper-like shape and is covered with cilia
