Invertebrates 6 Flashcards
Description (nematodes)
Nematodes, or roundworms, are abundant, mostly microscopic organisms found in various environments. They have a simple tubular gut and lack circulatory and respiratory systems.
Key Features(nematodes)
Protected by a cuticle, molted periodically. Sensory organs transmit information to a nerve ring. Reproduce mostly sexually, with males transferring sperm to females’ bodies.
Life Cycle(nematodes)
Some nematodes are free-living decomposers, while others are parasites infecting animals and plants, causing diseases.
Human Impact(nematodes)
Certain nematodes are economically important pests, affecting agriculture and livestock. Others cause diseases in humans, necessitating control measures.
Description(Echinoderms)
Echinoderms, including sea stars and sea urchins, possess a calcium carbonate endoskeleton and radial symmetry as adults. They have a unique water-vascular system for locomotion and respiration
Key Features(Echinoderms)
Primitive nervous system with no distinct brain. Fluid-filled coelom for circulation and gas exchange. Able to regenerate lost body parts and reproduce sexually with external fertilization.
Ecological Role(Echinoderms)
Echinoderms play critical roles in marine ecosystems as predators, prey, and habitat modifiers. They contribute to biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
Conservation(Echinoderms)
Echinoderms face threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. Conservation efforts aim to protect their habitats and manage human activities to ensure their survival.
