How often was torture used in Spain?
It was used in 1/3 of all cases
What is flogging?
A torture method where the victim would be publicly tied to a pillar and their hands bound, and then they would be whipped. They would often be naked.
What is burning at the stake?
A pile of dry wood with a stake at the centre would be created. The victim would be tied to the stake and then be set alight.
It took 30 minutes before the victim lost consciousness but if it was windy and the fire was blowing away from the victim, they could have to endure 2 hours of being slowly burned to death.
What is the rack?
The victim is tied down while some mechanical device, is attached to them, usually a crank or turning wheel and it tightens the ropes, stretching the victims body until the joints are dislocated. Continued pressure could cause the limbs to fall right off. They could also go slower to make them endure this torture for longer.
What is roasting feet over burning coals?
The victim would have their legs bound by a stock and then their feet burned by hot coals.
What is the Garrucha ?
The victims hands would be tied behind their back and theyβd be lifted off the ground by a rope tied around the wrists.
What is torture del Agua
The victim would be bound to the rack with their head lower than the rest of their body. The mouth would then be forced open and water forced in. The victim would risk suffocation if he didnβt βconfessβ. Itβs now known as water boarding
