Largest world faith which follows the teachings of Jesus Christ
Messiah
Hebrew word meaning saviour or rescuer. In Greek the word for saviour/rescuer in Christ - hence the name Jesus Christ|
Resurrection
Being brought back to life after dying
Ascension
Jesus physically rising into heaven
Trinity
The belief that God is one god with 3 parts Father Son and Holy Spirit
Denomination
A group within christianity
Evangelism
Spreading the Christian message in order to convert people
Disciple
The 12 main followers of Jesus who helped him spread his message
Missionaries
People who spread the Christian message, often travelling to other countries
Persecution
Discrimination against people who share an aspect of their identity eg. Christians, women, black people

Martyred
The word βmartyrβ comes from the Greek word meaning βwitnessβ. It is when a person is killed for their beliefs.
Scape goat
A term used when deliberately placing the blame of an action on another person or group of people.
Confessional
A booth where catholics ask Godβs forgiveness for the sins they have committed. (Sometimes being called absolved of your sins)
Eucharist
The practise of eating bread and drinking wine during a church service to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the reenactment of The Last Supper.
Eucharist is derived from the Greek word βECHANSTAβ meaning thanksgiving.
Penance
Prayer or some other action to show one is sorry for committing sins
Transubstantiation
The belief that the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ during Eucharist/holy communion to remember Jesusβ death.
Catholics believe that when the Priest repeats Jesusβ words from the Last Supper, the bread and wine actually turn into the body and blood of Jesus (although they still look the same)
Bishop
A Christian leader with authority over the priests and churches in an area.
Creed
A statement of belief which outlines the shared beliefs within a community.
Heresy
Beliefs that are opposed to the core beliefs of The Church.
Religious scriptures
Religious texts, such as the Bible.
Excommunication
Officially expelling someone from participating in the sacraments of services of the Christian Church.
Indulgences
Certificates that people bought from the Catholic Church so they would spend less time in purgatory when they died
Protestantism
A form of Christianity that began in the 16th Century as a protest against the Catholic Church
Reformation
A sixteenth-century movement to reform the Church, resulting in the division of the Western Church into Catholicism and Protestantism. It was led by Martin Luther
