Background to Yalta Conference :
The Grand Alliance decided to meet again to discuss the future of Germany after their defeat. They met in area of Russia called ‘Yalta’.
USSR had defeated Germany and now had control of Eastern Europe. Stalin wanted to keep this land.
Political consequence - UK
Churchill felt isolated after Stalin and Roosevelt got on well and made most of the agreements.
Territorial and political consequence - Germany
Germany would be divided into 4 zones to be controlled by British, French, USA and USSR. Berlin was divided too.
Economic consequence -
Germany to pay $20 million in reparations. Half would go to USSR.
Main objective -
To agree on post war settlement and what to do with Germany
Political consequence - USSR
The east Europe was looked after by Russia in their ‘Soviet Sphere of influence’
Social and political Consequence - Free Democratic Elections
Any country that had been taken over by Hitler was to have free elections.
International relationships consequence - United Nations
They agreed to join an organisation deigned to maintain peace called the United Nations.
Importance - Disagreement w USSR
It showed a lack of agreement on how much Germany should have to pay for reparations It revealed problems with the relationship between East and West.
Importance - Stalin wanting more land
Stalin was demanding more land and control in Poland than the USA was happy with.
Importance - Poland elections
It was agreed that any country that had been taken over by the Nazis (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia) would get free elections. The USSR was secretly unhappy with this fact as it proved they could not have everything they wanted.
Importance - territorial
Germany was divided into four but there were already some disagreements on how the East would be treated compared to the West.
