How Hitler went from Chancellor to Dictator
January 1933 - March 1933
5 reasons

A

1) Called for an election in March (in his mind it was the last one!)
2) The Reichstag Fire in February was blamed on Communists.
3) March 1933 - the Nazis won 288 seats.
4) Support allowed the Enabling Act to be passed.
5) Hitler began using the Enabling Act to pass laws that ended democracy in Germany.

Bruning was forced to resign after his unpopular policies and von Schleicher suggested a new Chancellor, von Papen, and Hitler agreed to support a less democratic “cabinet of Barons as long as the ban on the SA was lifted.

May - November 1932:

A

Von Papen governed as an ineffective Chancellor. There was violence in the streets in the July elections and this helped the Nazis gained support, up to 230 Seats. Von Papen hung as Chancellor until November, when he was sacked and replaced by von Schleicher as a last attempt by President Hindenburg to prevent making Hitler Chancellor

After Von Schleicher’s authority collapsed, Hitler was made Chancellor after Von Papen said he could “tame” Hitler if he was made Vice Chancellor. He was wrong.
