G. Lack of support for the Nazis and reorganisation 1924 - 1929 Flashcards
Mein Kampf
Where was Hitler when he wrote this?
*He actually dictated it to his secretary, whom he was allowed to have with him in prison!
He was spending 9 months in Landsberg Prison for his role in organising the Munich Putsch. The sentence would have been harsher, but the judge in the case was sympathetic to Hitler’s cause!
Mein Kampf
Why did he write it?
He wrote it to make the ideas that defined the Nazi Party really clear to a bigger audience. It was part of a new strategy to get power in Germany by winning the support of the masses of people.
Mein Kampf
What were the main ideas expressed?
The German Race (Aryans) would rule the world / There was a Jewish conspiracy to weaken Germany / Jews were the enemy / Nationalism / Socialism / Totalitarianism / strong family values.
Mein Kampf
How did Germans receive the book?
It became a best seller
Mein Kampf
What was the book the beginning of?
Making the Nazi Party a better organised and more electable Political Party.
What did Hitler do which meant they could communicate their message to people more clearly and begin to present themselves as a sensible alternative government.
- Hitler based the Nazi HQ in Munich.
- Franz Schwarz was made the treasurer of the Party to make sure the Party was well financed (had money) and the Party was set up into departments with people responsible for matters to do with big areas of German politics; for example finance and foreign relations. That way, the Nazis could set out to challenge Stresemann.
What did Hitler do to the Nazis look like they didn’t just rely on violence?
Youth groups of the Party and a women’s organisation were created to give the Nazi Party bigger appeal. It was no longer reliant on just the SA.
What did Hitler do to improve advertising of the party nationally?
A national Nazi Party was created with local leaders called “Gauleiters” put in place in each region of Germany. Josef Goebbels became the local leader of the Nazi Party in Berlin after the Bamberg Conference in 1926.
What gave the Nazis money to fund the propaganda idea of people like Goebbels, who wanted to buy a plane to fly Hitler all over Germany?
Hitler began to appeal to big business who supported his vision for returning Germany to the glory days of the past with a strong government. He received big donations from businessmen like Thyssen, Krupp and Bosch.
Bamberg conference
What did Hitler end at the Bamberg conference? Why and what was Hitlers conclusion?
Hitler ended the “northern” and “southern” split in the Nazi Party. The north emphasised the socialist part of the Nazi Party because it was full of industry, the south emphasised the nationalist part because it was rural. Hitler set out to reduce the influence of the socialist aspects of the Party because it made the Nazis too much like the Communists, their big enemies.
Bamberg conference
Who did Hitler persuade to pledge loyalty to him? What was the result?
Hitler persuaded Josef Goebbels, who supported the northern leaders, to pledge his loyalty to Hitler and as a result, he began to be promoted within the Nazi Party.
Bamberg conference
What happened to more socialist leaders?
Leaders in the Party who wanted the Nazis to be more socialist, like Strasser, began to be marginalised (pushed to one side) and Strasser was actually eventually murdered in 1934 during the Night of the Long Knives (a big clean out of Nazi leaders who Hitler thought were not loyal to him).
Bamberg conference
What did Hitler do during the conference?
During the conference, Hitler spoke for five hours to convince people that Communists were the enemies.
Bamberg conference
By the end of the conference what happened?
By the end of the conference, Hitler had a lot more power to enact that sorts of policies that he wanted. He had reduced the threats to his leadership from within the Party.
