SP Satellite State Flashcards
What were the consequences of
the use of the atomic bomb?
1945
Instigated the Arms Race…the USSR had built their own atomic bomb by 1949.
The USSR became more controlling over the “satellite states” (countries close to their border) for security reasons.
What were the consequences of
Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan?
1947
The USSR introduced Cominform as an agency to adminster control over the satellite states and make sure they refuse Marshall money.
The USSR introduced Comecon as a play to centrally plan the economies of countries of Eastern Europe.
What were the consequences of Cominform and Comecon?
1947 and 1949
The USSR had overall control of all Communist governments across the Satellite States of Eastern Europe.
Trade with the USA and Western European countries was minimised and American/capitalist influence was minimised .
What was the story of the Warsaw Pact?
1955
It completed the existence of two rival military alliances across the world. NATO had been formed in 1949.
It increased rivalry and made the Arms Race more intense. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles were created in 1957.
What were the consequences of the Brezhnev Doctrine?
1968
All satellite states risked being invaded if their Communist Party split from the way the USSR wanted Communism to be carried out.
It allowed the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 to be “restrospectically” justified.
What was the story of the collapse of the Warsaw Pact?
1989 - 1991
Perestroika
Glastnost
In the late 1980s, more freedoms led Communist satellite states to democratically elect governments and make choices.
In 1989, East Berlin brought the wall down and in 1990 Germany reunified - taking East Germany out of the pact.
The USSR could not prevent other satellite states wanting the same. It was officially over in 1991.
