LTR - How did some Germans feel after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles?
Some German people, nationalists, felt they had been “stabbed in the back” by their own government by their signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
LTR - From 1919 to 1923 what has the Nazi Party been doing and how did the government of Bavaria feel?
From 1919 to 1923, the Nazi Party had been growing in popularity in Munich and even the State government of Bavaria weren’t the biggest fans of the Weimar Government.
MTR - Who influenced Hitler?
Hitler was influenced by what had been achieved in Italy, with Mussolini’s fascist revolution, overthrowing democracy.
STR - What reached its peak in 1923 and how did that effect people?
During 1923, Hyperinflation reached its peak. Things that cost 100 marks in 1922, cost 200,000 billion marks in 1923. People were suffering. They had had enough.
STR - Why were Nationalists particularly angry at the time?
There German people, particularly hardcore nationalists like the Nazis and their supporters, were particularly angry by the Invasion of the Ruhr and the humiliation it had brought on Germany.
STR - Why was anger in Germany by Nationalists made worse?
The anger people felt was made worse by the fact that the Weimar Republic seemed unable to solve Germany’s growing list of problems.

The story of the Munich Putsch
- Hitler burst into a Munich Beer Hall on the 8th November 1923, supported by 800 SA soldiers.
- At gunpoint, von Kahr and the authorities of Bavaria agreed to support a takeover of Germany.
- The army remained in the hands of loyal army officials and when Hitler was elsewhere, his ally Ludendorff released von Kahr and the Bavarian authorities
- The next day, Hitler went ahead with the attempted takeover but was outgunned by the townspeople and army of Munich.
What was the consequence for Hitler himself?
Hitler was put on trial, he could have been sentenced to death for treason, but was only sentenced for 9 months in prison by a judge who was sympathetic to his aims and ambition for Germany.
How did Hitler use the trial?
Hitler used the trial to gain publicity and get more a nation-wide name for himself. He realised that a new strategy of winning over people and using politics and a democracy as a way of taking power in Germany was needed.
What did Hitler do in prison?
Hitler spent time in prison and while there he wrote “Mein Kampf”, which re-visited and built on lots of the ideas he had written in the 25 Point Plan.
What was the role of the SA in the early Nazi Party?
The SA was a private group run like a military force. They were used to quiet the opposition and to put across a sense of power and organisation. They were nicknamed the “Brown Shirts”.
After 1922, what was Hitlers power?
Hitler dictated what the Party was going to stand for. There was no discussion. He expected 100% loyalty.
What were 2 consequences of the failed Munich putsch on Germany?
The Weimar Government wanted to “manage” extreme politics in a better way, so the ban on the Nazis participating in elections was ended.
