Feudal Hierarchy

A

People in Medieval England had a rank.
King → Tenant-in-Chief → Knight → Peasant.
You had to show loyalty to those above you. Do homage.
Knights → Knight Service
Peasants → Labour Service

A

You were someone’s vassal if you had to be loyal to them.
You showed loyalty through an oath and doing a service.
If you did your service (job) correctly then you were paying homage to the person you needed to be loyal to.

A

You did homage by showing respect and gratitude and doing a job.
You would take an oath of loyalty.
Knights → Protect King’s Castle and serve in the army.
Peasants → Work the land for Knights.

A

If you were disloyal and did not do homage you would forfeit your land.

Itinerancy

A

Itinerancy means moving around a lot.
The King was itinerant because everyone in the country needed to know who he was.
The King moved around a lot to limit the chance of rebellion against him.

A

The first born son takes over as the next King when the old King dies.
This rule wasn’t really followed in Medieval times.

A

A set of rules.
Every town has its own Charter.
The Charter had to be followed inside the walls of the town.

A journey aimed at defending Christianity.
King Richard I went on a Crusade to capture Jerusalem from the Muslim armies of Saladin.

A

When you are officially forbidden from doing something.
The Pope placed an interdict on England participating in Church activities like burial and feast days.
1208 = year of the Interdict. to 1214

A

When the Pope kicks you out of the Church and you get called an enemy of God.
Pope excommunicated King John in 1209
They made up in 1213.

When you make decisions because of how you feel about things and don’t follow the law.
King John used this form of power a lot.
King John accepted bribes and made laws up based on who his enemies at the time were.
