Sources of Light Flashcards
What are Incandescent Lights?
The production of light as a result of a higher temperature. Very ineffective as only 5% - 10% of energy was converted to light in light bulbs, the rest being converted to heat.
What is Electric Discharge?
The process of creating light by passing an electric charge through a medium, typically a gas or vacuum. Lightning and Neon signs are examples of these.
What is Phosphorescent light?
The slow emission of light after absorption of Ultraviolet light. Phosphor is a material that absorbs Ultraviolet rays to emit light, examples including glow-in-the-dark objects.
What is fluorescent light?
The immediate emission of light after the absorption of ultraviolet light. This is 4-5x more efficient than incandescent light but contains mercury to produce the light. Examples include flourescent light bulbs
What is chemiluminescent light?
The direct production of light as a result of a chemical reaction with little or no heat produced, I.E glow sticks.
What is bioluminescent light?
The production of light through a living organism through a chemical reaction with little or no heat produced.
What is triboluminescent light?
The production of light due to crushing, scratching, or causing friction with an object. I.E., lifesavers.
What is Light-Emitting-Diodes light?
Light is produced as a result of electric current flowing in semiconductors. Very efficient and effective and is commonly used nowadays.
