Bio Organelles Flashcards
Understand the functions of Organelles in Eukaryotic Cells
What are Organelles and what are the functions of them (C)
Organelles are the small organs of cells that are specalized to perform specifc tasks. Organelles include organs such as the Mitochondria and Nucleus.
Function of Nuclues (C)
The control center of the cell that contains the DNA of the cells
Function of Nucleotos (C)
A spherical organelle whose primary function is to make Ribosomes
Function of Ribosomes (C)
A small intracellular organelle responsible for synthesizing proteins. They travel out of the Nucleotos to the Cytoplasm, to where they attatch to a rough Endoplasmic Reticulum which then transports the protein.
Function of Cytoplasm (C)
A jelly-like substance that serves as a filling in the cell where other Organelles float around
Function of Endoplasmic Reticulum (C)
sER (Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum) has no Ribosomes attatch to it and instead synthesizes other materials.
rER (Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum) has Ribosomes attatch to it, which it then takes part in early transformation of the proteins, and then transports the protein and other materials to Vesicles.
Function of Vesicles (C)
A bubble-like Organelle outside of the rER. It’s main job is to capture the proteins from the rER and transport them to the Golgi Apparatus.
Function of Golgi Apparatus (C)
The Golgi Apparatus’ takes the proteins from the Vesicles and customizes it by further compressing/folding the protein into useable shapes and adding other materials such as Lipids and Carbohydrates.
Function of Lysosome (C)
Small enclosed organelles filled with enzymes that break down cellular debris, serving as a garbage collector that takes in damaged or worn out cell parts
Function of Mitochondrian (C)
An organelle that is the powerhouse of the cell, meaning that it provides the energy for all cell activities. During cellular respiration, the Mitochondrian/Mitochondria cells provide ATP molecules. Some cells that require more energy have more Mitochondria.
Function of Cytoskeleton (C)
The skeleton of a cell, made up of Microfillaments that are made out of protein, and hollow tubes called Microtubules
Function of Centriole (C)
An organelle that is responsible for organizing Microtubules in the Cytoskeleton
Function of Chloroplasts (C)
Organelles only found in plants that produce Energy when photosynthesis occurs.
Function of Cell Walls (C)
Organelles only found outside of plant cells, which are responsible for shaping, protecting, and supporting the cell.
Function of Vacuoles (C)
Sac-like structures that store water and other materials like food. In plant cells, there is only one Vacuole, but in there multiple, smaller ones in Animal cells.
