Imaging Technologies Flashcards
What is an X-ray and what is it’s applications?
An X-ray is a medical technology that produces electromagnetic wave lengths that penetrates soft tissue to capture images of hard tissues such as bones. Commonly used to view any broken bones.
What are CT/CATs and what are its applications?
CT stands for computerized Tonography; CT’s also produce wave lengths, but capture different angles and slices of the subject, converting captures data to create a 3D image. This is also used to view hard tissues and is commonly used to view any broken bones.
What are Ultrasounds and its applications?
Ultrasounds are technologies that produce soundwaves that capture internal organs, usually soft tissue to create an image. Ultrasounds are usually used to capture live images of fetus, but can also be used to observe organ function.
What are MRI’s and its applications?
MRI’s are Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which involves passing radio lengths around the body to create multiple images of an organ. Produces images similar to CT scans but in greater detail, and is used to contrast soft tissue with hard tissue, as well as to diagnose diseases in organs and soft tissues.
What are PET scans and its applications?
Uses radioactive materials to diagnose how the body is functioning, revealing issues of tissues and organs. Is used to view soft tissues and to diagnose and track cancer treatements
What is Endoscopy scans and its applications?
A long wire with a camera and flash is inserted into a patient to get real footage of tissues without cutting into the body. Is used to diagnose certain diseases, take tissue samples, and perform surgeries.
What is Microscopy and its applications?
Microscopy is when magnifying glasses are used to view small objects and diagnose diseases.
What is Radiotherapy and its applications?
Treatment used to kill cancer cells through the use of radiation.
