Cancer Cells Flashcards
Understand how Cancer works
What is Cancer
F
Cancer is the uncontrolled reproduciton of mutated cells
What makes a cell Cancerous
F
Cells become Cancerous when their DNA is mutated, as then they are no longer able to perform their functions and will no longer perform as intended
What Genes become modified for Cancer to form
F
If the Pro-Oncogenes become mutated, then they will make the cells grow uncontrollaby, turning into Oncogenes. If both Tumour Suppressors are damaged, then they cannot stop the growth of the cells.
What are Pro-Oncogenes and Oncogenes
C
Pro-Oncogenes is a gene in our DNA that supports cell growth, however, if this is mutated, then it will cause the cell to grow uncontrollably, which would then be called an Oncogene.
What are Tumor Suppressors
C
Tumour Suppressors are two genes inherited by our parents that stops the growth of cells. If one Tumour Suppressor is damaged, the other one will still be able to function and stop growth, but if both are damaged, then the cell will grow uncontrollably.
What is a Tumour
A tumour is a group of Cancerous Cells.
Difference between Malignant and Benign Tumors
Malignant tumors are tumors that spread to other parts of the body and are considered cancerous, whereas Begnin tumors are tumors that stay in one spot and are generally harmless but should still stay under inspection.
What are the three ways of treating Cancer
Radiation: By only targeting cancer cells, doctors can use radiation to kill tumors.
Surgery: If the tumor is physically available, surgey can become an option to get rid of tumors.
Chemotherapy: Intense drugs that can kill cancer cells, but can also kill nearby cells as well.
