How many cranial nerves are in the cervical region?
8
How many cranial nerves are in the thoracic region?
12
How many cranial nerves are in the lumbar region?
5
How many cranial nerves are in the sacral region?

What is a dermatome?
Area of skin that is innervated by a single spinal nerve
What are encapsulated receptors?
Nerve ending wrapped in glial cells or connective tissue
What kind of sensations travel along the Dorsal column pathway?
Conscious sensation > vibration, visceral pain, limb movement, precise touch
What kind of sensations travel along the spinothalamic pathway?
Crude/light touch, pressure, tickle, pain, temperature
Where is the sensory cortex located?
Post central gyrus
How does injured tissue stimulate nociceptors?
Release of prostaglandins, histamine and bradikin
What are the characteristics of ‘1st pain’?
Stabbing, sharp, localised pain. Myelinated axons - fast conduction
What are the characteristics of ‘2nd pain’?
Dull long lasting pain. Unmyelinated axons, slow conduction
What is the spinothalamic route’s role in pain signalling?
Sending somatic pain to cortex
What is the spinoreticular route’s role in pain signalling?
Visceral, emotional and behavioural reaction to pain
