Organisation Of The Body Flashcards
What are the characteristics of eukaryotic cells?
Extensive organelles, nucleus
What are the characteristics of a prokaryotic cell?
No nucleus, no organelles, cell wall and a capsule
What is the purpose of the plasma membrane?
Defines boundaries of the cell, acts as a gate keeper by controlling flow of substances in and out of the cell. Contain receptors and identifiers for cell function
What is the function of the lysosome?
Recycle centre of the cell, contains enzymes that break down small molecules. Destroy unwanted proteins.
What do the mitochondria do?
Synthesise ATP from glucose for energy
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Protein synthesis
What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Lipid synthesis
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?
Packaging substances into vesicles and sending them to parts of the cell or to the membrane for transport out of the cell
What do the secretory glands do?
They contain product to be circulated in the body, bind to membrane and expelled by exocytosis eg insulin
Define ‘tissue’
Aggregation of cells with a specialised structure or function
Function of epithelium?
Covering tissue
Function of connective tissue?
Support cells
