Endocrine System Flashcards
What hormones does the posterior pituitary gland release?
ADH, oxytocin
What hormones does the hypothalamus produce?
Thyroid releasing hormone, prolactin releasing factor, GnRH, corticotrophin releasing hormone,
What hormones does the anterior pituitary gland release?
Thyroid stimulating hormone, prolactin, luetinising hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, growth hormone
What does TSH do?
Stimulates breakdown of thyroglobulin into T3/T4
Where is calcitonin produced?
In the c cells of the thyroid
What is the function of calcitonin?
Responsible for lowering calcium and phosphate levels in the blood
What receptors to peptide hormones act on?
Membrane receptors
What receptors do steroid hormones act on?
Nuclear/cytoplasmic receptors
What is the role of cAMP?
Acts as a 2nd messenger, opens ion channels and activates enzymes
What are the different classes of steroid hormones?
Mineralcorticoids, glucocorticoids, sex steroids
Where is aldosterone produced ?
Adrenal cortex
What type of steroid is aldosterone?
Mineralcorticoid
What is the function of aldosterone?
Increases osmolality of the blood by causing sodium re absorption in kidney
How do amine hormones act?
Activate transcription of specific genes
Name the 3 zones of the adrenal cortex
Sons reticularis, zone fasticulata, zone glomerulosa
