SOG FIRE 026 VENTILATION Flashcards
What is the purpose of ventilation
To increase the survivability of the environment, increase visibility and decrease property damage by compartmentalizing fire spread and decrease the time in which it takes firefighters to reach the seat of the fire
What is the purpose of the Ventilation guideline?
To provide a framework for the coordinated removal of smoke and superheated fire gases that are the result of fire
What are the two main factors which cause ventilation induced flashover in ventilation limited fires?
Indiscriminately venting
Venting before application of water to main body of fire
(UNCOORDINATED FIRE ATTACK)
What are the 2 forms of tactical ventilation?
Venting for life
Venting for fire
What are the 3 ways that tactical ventilation coordinated with the engine company can facilitate extinguishment of the main body of fire?
Verbal order from the engine company officer or IC
Radio request from the engine officer or IC
After hearing or seeing signs of extinguishment
Ventilation should be?
Controlled
Coordinated
Communicated
What needs to be taken into account when venting to facilitate a search?
Flow path, ability to isolate the area where firefighters are searching or about to search
Door control is critical to isolating your position when searching. If a member determines to VES, what shall occur?
Clear entire window
Sweep for victims
Sound floor
What should be done if a victim is found on the way to close a door during VEIS?
Still close the door. This action will help facilitate a quicker removal of the victim
Which rooms do you not want to become isolated in during VEIS?
Fire room
Bathrooms
What are the types of ventilation?
Natural-convected or natural wind currents
Mechanical- Fans/HVAC systems to move smoke or heat
Vertical- Skylights/existing roof openings, cutting a hole
Horizontal- Windows, doors, wall openings
Hydraulic- Hose streams
