Sodium Bicarbonate Flashcards
What is NaHCO3?
Sodium Bicarbonate
What is the brand name for NaHCO3
Same as generic name
Drug class of NaHCO3
Hydrogen ion buffer
Mechanism of action of NaHCO3
NaHCO3 becomes Na+ and HCO3. HCO3- and H+ becomes H2O and CO2
Indications for NaHCO3
Acidosis, cardiac arrest, TCA or ASA OD, shifts in K+ back into the cell in hyperkalemia
Contraindications for MgSO4
heart blocks, myocardial damage
Adverse effects of NaHCO3
Hypernatremia (elevated sodium levels), metabolic alkalosis, necrosis at IV site, hypokalemia, and peripheral edema
Precautions of NaHCO3
may deactivate sympathomimetics. Increases effects of amphetamines to TCA’s (tricyclic acid).
Dose and admin for NaHCO3
1 meq (milliequivelant)/kg IVP. May repeat at 0.5meq/kg
