Mechanism of action of Mannitol
Decreases cerebral edema and ICP. Promotes urinal excretion of toxins
Indications for Mannitol
Cerebral edema, increased ICP, rhabdomyolysis, and blood transfusion medications
Contraindications for Mannitol
Hypotension, P.E, severe dehydration, intercranial bleeding, and CHF
Adverse effects of Mannitol
Headache, confusion, seizures, P.E, tachycaric, chest pain, CHF, hypo/hypertension, edema, N/V, dehydration
Precautions of Mannitol
may precipitate digitalis toxicity
Dose and admin for Mannitol
0.5-1g/kg IV over 5-10mins and then 0.25-2g/kg every 4-6hrs as needed
