Sodium and Water Balance Flashcards
what is water balance controlled by?
ADH
action of ADH
water is reabsorbed from renal tubules
what does increased ADH do to urine?
small amount of concentrated urine
what is sodium balance controlled by?
steroids (aldosterone and cortisol)
what do aldosterone and cortisol do to sodium?
cause sodium to be reabsorbed
what are the two fluid compartments in the body?
- extracellular 33.3%
2. intracellular 66.6%
what does the extracellular fluid compartment consist of?
plasma
interstitial fluid
which fluid compartment has lower Na+?
intracellular
which fluid compartments can water move through?
all body compartments
what fluid compartments can sodium move through?
ECF only
two causes of hyponatraemia
- too little Na+
2. too much water
what does too little Na+ cause?
reduces fluid in the ECF leading to dehydration
causes of too little Na+
loss from the gut (vomiting, diarrhoea)
loss from adrenals/kidneys
losses from skin
rarely low intake
management of too little Na+
give sodium
what does too much water cause?
less of an effect as water moves through all compartments
