2 set which events in life are more likely to lead to an illness.
participants and RM
correlational study
medical records of 5,000 patients
procedure
1) reviewed medical records of 5,000 patients
2) created a scale of events that are most to least likely to lead to an illness.
results
loss of loved one is most likely
divorce is second most likely
found that
major life changes good or bad can lead to illness
positive correlation between the life events and leading to illness.
event w highest/higher degree of life change = illness.
implications
major life changes still lead to an increase in stress within an individual - which would mainly lead to depression.
support DTSM - neg life events (which were more likely to lead to illness) would lead to illness.
this is because
the accumulation of stress can overwhelms an individuals psych resilience, and their ability to adopt to changes in their external environment esp regarding factors like lack of social support, divorce, loss of loved one.
this shows that
sociocultural factors play a bug role in how stress impacts mental health, for example, cultures that stigmatize mental health challenges may be less likely to seek help. SLE’s are not only shaped by an individuals personal experiences, but also sociocultural factors.
this implies that the DTSM
effectively explains the onset of depression by incorporating SC factors as stressors, SLE’s can trigger D episodes more specifically
the DTSM is highly applicable in understanding D, as it emphasizes how stressors interact with one’s vulnerabilities (eg. pressure to succeed etc)
