social standing of an individual in comparison to others in that society. Based on education, income and occupation.
generally, the higher the ses,
the better health (and vice versa)
How does income affect health?
Affects accessibility to food, recreation (healthy body weight), healthcare (reduces morbidity and mortality), transport (social connection), education.
HOw does occupation affect health
people of manual occupations often come from a lower SES and have higher mortality rates than those in professional occupations.
Higher risk of soft tissue injuries and back pain
How does education affect health?
more educated, more likely to be health literate
If parents are educated, more likely to pass on value of education to children
Define: health literate
have knowledge about factors that influence heatlh
