Propaganda
Presenting one-sided information in an effort to influence public opinion in a particular direction
Monroe Doctrine
This policy stated that the U.S. would view any efforts by European powers to interfere with newly independent countries in the western hemisphere as a threat to U.S. security
Roosevelt Corollary
An addition to the Monroe Doctrine that stated that the U.S. had the right to become involved in Latin American affairs in order to preserve law and order
Gunboat Diplomacy
Also known as “Big Stick” Diplomacy, this is a foreign policy which emphasizes the use of military power or the threat of force
Moral Diplomacy
Foreign policy based on moral principles, or ideas of right and wrong
Dollar Diplomacy
Taft’s foreign policy, which emphasized investment, trade, and economic ties to build US influence
Spheres of Influence
A section of a country in which a foreign nation enjoys special rights and powers
Open Door Policy
The trade agreement written by U.S. Secretary of State John Hay, that stated that all nations should be free to trade with China
