Definitions of Specific Parts of the Cell - Biology Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the Mitochondria
A
- “Power House” of the cell
- Converts food into high-energy compounds the cell can use (ATP)
- Cellular Respiration
2
Q
Describe the Cell Membrane
A
- Contains phospholipids and proteins
- Regulates what goes in and out of the nucleus
3
Q
Describe the Chloroplast
A
- Uses energy from the sun to make energy rich molecules
- Photosynthesis
4
Q
Describe the Nucleus
A
- Controls most cell processes and contains the hereditary material DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
Contains:
- Chromatin: Granular material visible within nucleus (DNA bound to proteins)
- Chromosomes: Condensed chromatin created when cells are about to divide
