Social Structure and Demographics Flashcards
Cross Sectional Studies (i.e. Surveys) are strictly:
Correlational studies. There is no causality relationship that can be made with the data.
Quasi-Natural Experiment
Can study someone or group over time and see how two or more factors change over time.
Modern Day Men compared to Women:
Have less degrees, thus are not as educated
Latent Function
unexpected, unintended, or unrecognized positive consequences of manifest functions…. but sometimes not
Manifest Function
deliberate actions that serve to help a given system
Dysfunction (functionalist perspective)
When someone cannot perform their role in society…. whether it be to illness or something else.
Tenet of Justice
Upholding the care of everyone is the same no matter of health insurance, income, race, religion, etc…. i.e. ordering test to be done even though the patients insurance (medicaid) wont cover it as well as say, Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Tenet of Beneficience
Acting in best interest of patients….. i.e. Ending a clinical trial once data supports the experimental group has improvements compared to control….. this leads to the control now getting the experimental treatment (which is better care)
Autonomy
You have the right to accept or deny your treatment plan provided/proposed by the physician
Case Control Study
A case-control study start by identifying the number of subjects with or without a particular outcome, and then look backwards to assess how many subjects in each group had exposure to a particular risk factor. Best way to study an outbreak of a disease in a small population.
Content Analysis
Content analysis is a sociological method that is used to make inferences about communication.
Neighborhood Social Economic Inequalities cause…
from a physical barrier (distance in living) causing a social barrier (never communicate regularly with a person like a doctor) and closed networks.
Conflict Theory
It assumes that power and authority are unequally distributed across a society, and that groups attempt to maintain their advantages.
Primitive Cultural Development
