Sensation and Perception Flashcards
Pacinian Corpuscles
Pacinian corpuscles respond to deep pressure and vibration… think of somatosensation
5 Somatosensations
- Pacinian corpuscles: respond to deep pressure and vibration
- Meissner corpuscles: respond to light touch
- Merkel discs: respond to deep pressure and texture
- Ruffini endings: respond to stretch
- Free nerve endings: respond to pain and temperature
How does perception differ from sensation
An absolute threshold is the minimum of stimulus energy that is needed to activate a sensory system. In other words, below that threshold of stimulus input, no sensation occurs. Perception does not use absolute thresholds, but a threshold of conscious perception.
How Sound is transducted from cochlea
Sound entering the cochlea causes vibrations that displace hair cells along the basilar membrane. These hair cells connect to neurons in the auditory nerve, then sending impulses to the brain. Which hair cells are vibrating are an indication to the brain of the pitch of the sound.
Cilliary Muscle
It’s in the front of the eye
Signal Detection Theory
Utilizes individuals using past experiences to respond to a stimuli.
False Positive
For hypothesis testing only!. Do not confuse with false alarm.
Only used with statistics
Parvocellular Cells vs. Magnocellular Cells
Shape is detected by parvocellular cells
Motion is detected by magnocellular cells
Gate Theory of Pain
Need a tactile stimulus like rubbing hands to allievate pain.
Threshold Theory of Pain
The threshold theory of pain dictates that the signal for pain is not interpreted as such until it crosses a certain minimum limit.
Nociceptors may have a high limit to meet threshold than a thermoreceptor
Judt World Hypothesis
The just-world hypothesis is the belief that good things happen to good people. This matches the scenario that the doctor got her promotion for doing good things.
Halo Effect
The halo effect occurs when one makes a judgment about another person using one’s overall impression of that person.
Self enhancement
Self-enhancement posits that individuals have a need to maintain self-worth.
Cunneate Nucleus
The cuneate nucleus carries fine touch and proprioceptive information from the upper body to the thalamus.
Signal Detection Theory
Signal detection theory focuses on the changes in our perception of the same stimuli depending on both internal (psychological) and external (environmental) context.
