Uneven distribution of environmental hazards in communities
Spatial Inequality
a form of social stratification across territories and their populations… and can occur along residential, environmental, and global lines.
i.e. not having appropriate bussing to school because you live in Baltimore City - Park Heights….. Or simply I cannot go to Riverhill because I live near Marriotts Ridge
Social Immobility
Inability to move in social hierarchy
Geographical Stratification
Defining you based on area…. i.e. You technically live on West Baltimore since you on 31st street so you cannot join the East-side Gang
Second Sickness
Health Outcomes being exacerbated by social situations (i.e. poverty and cannot afford insurance, living near waste factory, too easy to access processed foods, etc.) …. heart disease, diabetes, cancer, HIV turning to AIDS.. etc are all examples
Coping
Can vary based on SES… low SES individuals tend to cope less (or less effectively) with stressor situations than a high SES individual would in that same situation
Bureaucracy
System of government where decisions are made by a non-elected representative
Institutionalization
ingraining ideas and concepts into organizations, social systems, or society as a whole
Token Economy
system that rewards positive behavior or achievements with tokens that can be exchanged for privileges, treats, or other reinforcers
