Ego-Syntonic
person views their behavior as normal, acceptable, and in harmony with their goals…. syntonic is I act ALL ALRIGHT WITH ME —> personality disorders are ego syntonic because you agree with your actions.
Ego-Dystonic
All other psych disorders beside personality disorders….. that person sees that disorder as upon them as something intrusive and bothersome…. dystonic is I act NOT LIKE ME
Personality Disorder
A pattern of behavior that is inflexible, and maladaptive, causing distress and impairment in at least two of these: cognition, emotions, interpersonal functioning or impulse control
Alzheimer’s Includes:
- Diffuse atrophy of the brain on CT or MRI
- Flattened sulci in the cerebral cortex
- Enlarged cerebral ventricles
- Deficient blood flow in parietal lobes, which is correlated with cognitive decline
- Reduced metabolism in temporal and parietal lobes
- Senile plaques of β-amyloid (a misfolded protein in β-pleated sheet form)
- Neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau protein
- Decreased acetylcholine levels
- Decreased choline acetyltransferase levels
Dependent Personality Disorder
Individuals with this tend to remain dependent on one specific person, such as a parent or significant other, to take actions and make decisions
Delusions of Grandeur
Involve the belief that the person is remarkable in some significant way, such as being an inventor, historical figure, or religious icon
Delusions of Persecution
Involve the belief that the person is being deliberately interfered with, discriminated against, plotted against, or threatened
Delusion of Reference
Involve the belief that common elements in the environment are directed toward the individual
Thought Broadcasting
The belief that one’s thoughts are broadcast directly from one’s head to the external world
Thought Insertion
The belief that thoughts are being placed in one’s head
Echolalia
People repeat the sounds and phrases they hear
Antisocial Personality Disorder
The essential feature of the disorder is a pattern of disregard for and violations of the rights of others
.. not dealing with avoiding people, but more so doing innapropriate things
Avoidant Personality Disorder
he affected individual has extreme shyness and fear of rejection. The individual will see herself as socially inept and is often socially isolated, despite an intense desire for social affection and acceptance
Paranoid Personality Disorder
Is marked by a pervasive distrust of others and suspicion regarding their motives
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Having a weird obsession with a body part or part(s). It can also be not comfortable with your body… i.e. feeling too fat, ugly, unattractive, or whatever.
Conversion Disorder
A disorder characterized by unexplained symptoms affecting voluntary motor or sensory functions.
…. You lose sight after watching a tragic accident… but its all psychological.
Downward drift hypothesis
States that schizophrenia causes a decline in socioeconomic status, leading to worsening symptoms, which sets up a negative spiral for the patient toward poverty and psychosis
Empathy–altruism hypothesis
According to this theory, one individual helps another person when he or she feels empathy for the other person, regardless of the cost.
Mnemonic for Major depressive Disorder
mnemonic “Sadness + SIG E. CAPS”: Sleep, Interest, Guilt, Energy, Concentration, Appetite, Psychomotor symptoms, Suicidal thoughts
Major Depressive Disorder
Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder characterized by at least one major depressive episode, which is a period of at least two weeks with at least five symptoms.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
In this disorder, there are two or more personalities that recurrently take control of a person’s behavior. Her son does not display two or more personalities.
Personal Story: I went to elementary school with a girl that maybe twice a year, would not go by her name Paula, and go by another name instead. She even acted out completely differently. Now that I think about it, she may have had a dissociative identity disorder. … switching between Paula and this oher character of hers.
Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder
This disorder often presents as a feeling of automation, and can have findings like a failure to recognize one’s reflection. The world may take on a dreamlike or insubstantial quality.
Somatic symptom disorder
Involves at least one somatic symptom, which may or may not be linked to an underlying medical condition, that causes disproportionate concern
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Constant seeking of attention
