Folkways
Folkways refer to behavior considered polite in a particular context, such as the proper etiquette of tilting the bowl away from oneself when eating soup.
Norms
How to go about NORMAL everyday situations.
Aligning Actions
Making an EXCUSE to be the reason you did something or could not do something. …. Kind of what Joe Biden did when Kamala Harris attacked him for the bussing laws.
Groupthink
Consensus without alternatives…… meaning, you do not think about “is this actually possible, or reasonable”… and example of Boeing corporate board saying we want a new airplane launched despite engineers saying the plane does not work… they do not care and all they hear is we want money money money, and as a result a bad defective plane is sent out, and people die… because of the groupthink of a corporate board
Ego Expressive
AN object or ting that helps express your identity….. a Harley Davidson bike rider defines themself as a free thinking individual and a badass… what better way to express that then getting a Harley Davidson which will help you look that way.
Self Disclosure
Stating who you are and your intentions.. 2) Revealing information about yourself
Ingratiation
try to flatter someone to get them to do you a favor
Alter-casting
trying to get someone to act a certain way by telling them what someone in their role should behave like by imposing an identity DIRECTLY onto them…. “YOU as a police officer should be more worried about catching bad guys rather than writing speeding tickets”… n
Social Facilitation
Is the ability to perform easier task better when watched, but to perform more difficult task worse when watched.
Social Network
Relationships among individuals
Social Stratification
The differenciations in society such as money, wealth, class, profession, race
Role Strain
Role strain is the tension that results from competing demands within the context of a single role.
Role Conflict
Doing something that sucks because it may cause conflicts outside of your role.. like firing your best friend because you’re their manager
Triad vs Dyad
The triad, three person groups such as the physician–patient–cultural liaison group, is considered relatively more stable because of the additional social ties.
Dyads, two-person groups such as the physician–patient group, are unstable because either party can break the single social tie.
From the perspective of basic group dynamics in sociology, larger groups are generally considered more stable but less intimate, whereas smaller groups are usually considered less stable but more intimate.
Achieved Status
Status obtained as a result of you putting in effort for it…. i.e. getting a sex change operation to become female, earning your M.D. degree.
Appraisal Model
In the appraisal model of emotional expression, cognitive processes occur in response to a situation which then triggers an emotion, followed by biologically predetermined expressions of that emotion.
Primary Socialization vs Secondary Socialization
Primary is learned from family teaching you values on how to behave.
Secondary is how you learn to behave and interact with other groups such as, your basketball team, chess club, friends, etc
Ingratiation
use of flattery to try to get others to like you more.
Display Rules
how emotions are displayed in society.
this can change culture to culture
Cultural Syndrome
Expecting some behavior to be the norm.
i.e. expecting your interviewer for med school to give you more than one word responses between statements and questions.
