when presented with a frightening stimulus they would choose the cloth mother
when they were left in an unfamiliar room they would show the same behaviour as an infant child
what did monkeys in total isolation show?
emotional shock/ issues
can isolates recover?
yes - especially with help from younger (3 month old) ‘therapist’ monkeys
- even 12 month olds can recover
the fear is extinguished when nothing bad happens to the monkeys when being around the therapist monkeys
what does social isolation increase?
self directed and stereotypic behaviour - biting, rocking
what does social isolation cause deficits in?
social behaviour - directed at others (playing with peers)
what does social isolation effect specifically?
social behaviour - cognitive ability is unaffected
